In Memory of Her – Eleonore Powell

IMH ELWATER friend Eleonore Powell, 98, passed away on June 29, 2015 surrounded by family and friends at Pilgrim Place, Claremont, California. She is the mother of our dear friend and colleague Loey Powell who is engaged in distinguished social justice ministry with the United Church of Christ.

Eleonore, and her late husband Oliver who was a UCC minister, modeled openness and welcome to all on many fronts—racial, sexual, and interreligious—long before it was popular. Their home was warm and inviting. Their care for those who are marginalized was transparent.

Eleonore is survived by her loving family and countless people who were attracted as we were to her practical wisdom, sense of humor, and unwavering support for all who struggle for justice. May her memory inspire us to live long, meaningful lives.
